A letter to help
Hello everyone! This is my Action Project for my Humanities class, Policy. This unit, we focused a lot of legislation, getting to talk with groups focused on certain legislation, to even sitting in on a city council meeting (it was quite boring though). Even before we starting the project, we were asked to think about a piece of legislation we wanted to talk about, which led to us being tasking with writing a letter to a representative of ours to tell them about the legislation we want them to vote on. This is my project, enjoy!

Dear Sen. Duckworth,
As you may already be aware, there are many countries in the world that are vehemently against LGBTQI+ peoples, to the point where consensual, sexual same-sex relationships can be punishable by death. Even in our borders, there are many right now fighting to erase gender-affirming care for trans folk in specific. This is why I urge you to vote in favor of S. 1007, the International Human Rights Defense Act, allowing for the appointment of a Special Envoy to help the Secretary of State on LGBTQI+ issues.
Over 67 countries in the world still have laws that discriminate against same-sex couples, many of which are United Nations members. This already sets a bad precedent, but there’s even worse. In the Department of State’s 2021 report of human rights practices, there’s been a disturbing trend of violence against those in the LGBTQI+ community. All of this is happening while legislators contradict themselves. Campo-Engelstein says how states like Texas still allow for intersex “correction”, yet bans any other gender-affirming care in the state.
As I write to you, you probably know I am your constituent. I am also someone who identifies with the LGBTQI+ community, and have found people in that community that I am able to call my dear friends. If this law were to pass, people like myself and my friends all over the world would be able to breathe a little easier, knowing that there’s official legislation that can protect people like us.
There is also the fact that, as the United States of America, we are considered and proudly present ourselves as the Land of the Free. We say we welcome anyone within our borders, yet all of this legislation only serves to contradict this notion. We try to hide those who are “other” than the norm, showing them no compassion. With the passing of this law, however, we can hopefully set a precedent for everyone, showing them that there is hope. Many may oppose this law, saying how it’s unnecessary, how there’s bigger issues and how it won’t solve anything. To those people, I would say that the Voting Rights Act of 1964 helped ensure your right to vote. Yet, when it was taken down, suddenly many people were unable to vote due to voting centers closing down near them. Legislation helps. Fighting for legislation helps. It may be small steps, yet we must push to make sure everyone has a place anywhere.
This piece of legislation is vital for the fight for rights for LGBTQI+ people. There are many who are scared and have no clue what'll happen tomorrow, and so working to give them hope is what you can do. Please, I implore you to for yes on S. 1007 and ensure that the fight for rights does not go unnoticed.
