The Tactile
Hello everyone! This is my final project for my Light, Sound, and Time class! In this unit for the class, we studied the way we interacted with time and how we understand it. We went over concepts like general relativity, how pendulums measure time, how we have captured time over the years, and how we have evolved to used time. Our FE for this class was with an astronomer, who went over some of his works and how those relate to time. This all led to our Action Project, which was to create a new and unique way to keep track of time. This is my invention, the Tactile. Enjoy!
For some calculations:
I imagine that the first model would be around 42mm, meaning it would have a 21mm radius. The average thickness of a 42mm watch is 7mm. Seeing as a watch is cylindrical, I used the cylinder volume formula to get 9693.18^3. I then wanted to find the arc length of the watch. If there was a 90 degree angle on the watch, and I wanted to find the arc length, I would first multiply 2*3.14*21 to get the circumference of the watch. From that, I get 131.88 mm. Then, we set up cross multiplication to get 90/360 = x/131.88. You multiply 90 and 131.38 and 360 and x, getting you 360x = 11869.2. To get x alone, we have to divide 11869.2 by 360, which would get us 32.97 mm.
As for the evolution of my product, I stated in the video that it was off smartwatches. There have been watches for the blind built, but of the ones I saw, there was only a couple of smartwatches built with blind people in mind. I found that interesting, which is why I decided to take on the project. I added both analog and digital parts to allow those who are blind to use both in conjunction with one another. I also make it concave, giving it a different feel when you're near the rim. I also wanted
The main thing I would want to change is the video. I felt as though I was stilted, that I didn't have enough passion for it. I like my idea, but it just didn't feel as though I was excited for it. I'd also like some better visuals, ones that feel more complete and more expressive. Finally, I would edit the video so much better, and make it a lot more vibrant. All in all though, I think this project was fairly well done for the work I put in.
