Fore!

Hey everyone! This is my Action Project for my Par for the Course class. In this class, we played a lot of golf, but also went over how it works. We then were asked to create a course that people could play, trying to relate it to a Sustainable Development Goal and some organizations that coincide with it as well. This is my course, so hopefully you enjoy it.

My course is pretty simple. It’s a ramp with a reverse cone shape. Some might be able to make it in one try, but others may not. If you find yourself not able to get the ball in the hole, then just flip over this note and ask me for help! You’ll then find the course can be disassembled, making the ramp a flat surface and (hopefully) much easier.

We were also asked to link it to a SDG, a Sustainable Development Goal. This is because it helped the direction of our course. The goal I chose was Goal 3, Good Health. I stretched the idea a bit to mental health, and my course shows this. The idea is that, while some people might be able to do things on their own, others can’t. Some might feel like asking for help is wrong or cheating, but it’s ok! I wanted a course that showed this to the player. The organization I chose to link this with was the Trevor Project and NAMI, organizations that help teens and young adults talk about mental health and get help. One you look through, talk about them to people in your life. Spreading the word is one of the best things you can do to make sure people know about these organizations. And hey, donate if you can!

When coming up with the idea of the course, the course ideas I had were interesting yet felt like too much. It wouldn’t be as easy to move around, so when my teacher suggested that I do this sort of ramp idea, I wanted to try it. The board was pretty big, and the materials were right there. It wouldn't be too much of an issue to put everything together, as I wasn't gluing anything down.

The meaning of my course is the idea of asking for help. When thinking on how to relate this to SDG 3, the idea of asking for help came to mind. I wanted the people playing it to feel the experience of being stuck and not knowing what to do. Of course, some people might be able to get through the course without any help, much like how some people don’t need as much help getting through their own problems. There will always be people, however, who need more support or guidance to get through what they’re dealing with. That’s why I wanted to highlight this through my course.

The measurements of the course are as follows. The main board’s dimensions are 36in x 42in. The ramp’s dimensions are 6in x 8.5in/. The ring’s diameter is 4.5in. The logs used in the reverse cone shape are roughly the same length, with one of them being 28in and the other being 30in. The starting position is a foot away from the ramp, to give people more of a chance to hit the ball well.
