Sonnet to Macduff

Hey everyone! Welcome to my first Action Project (AP) for my course, Drama! In Drama, we are going over plays and talking about different aspects of them. In Unit 1, we went over queens and, more generally, how women were seen and still seen today. For this unit, we read Macbeth and even watched an adaptation of it. In Macbeth, gender often didn’t stop people from doing what they wanted or saying what they wanted to say. And because they did what they wanted, it either led them to their downfall or helped them in some way. For this AP, we were tasked to talk to one of the characters in Macbeth and give them advice to better their outcome in the form of a sonnet. I chose to talk to Macduff because, while he is a good man that ultimately ended Macbeth, he let his family die. My advice to him would be to carry out his plan but to take his family with him. This is my sonnet, so I hope you enjoy it!

>Sonnet in text form:

Macduff, Macduff, listen to thy

Macduff, Macduff, thou time is soon

Your time to kill the traitor is nigh

It is you that will bring his doom

“Had you as many sons as you have hairs”
You may not need to worry

But you must be aware

Before you run off in a hurry

You are a cunning person, yet still a man

You must not leave those you love behind

Understand that you must a plan

Before you leave Scotland in a bind(?)

Your fight with Macbeth will liberate all

But do not forget you’re a man first of all

This unit was pretty enjoyable, and being able to go over a play like Macbeth in detail is pretty interesting. While I haven’t written a sonnet, learning how to and making one was actually somewhat fun. The hard part was actually figuring out what to write for it. It took some thinking, but I was able to find something to write about. All in all, this was a good project, so I hope you enjoyed it as well.
